International Scientific Workshop: Mechanisms for Implementing Climate-Smart Agriculture in the Agricultural System for a Sustainable Agricultural Environment
Workshop Introduction:
Climate change is currently and in the near future a significant concern for both developed and developing countries, especially after the Paris Agreement following the Climate Summit held in Paris, France, in 2015. Environmental pollution, including agricultural environmental components, is also one of the critical issues in the Arab world. In response to these challenges, numerous programs, reports, events, and strategies have been launched to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change and environmental pollution, specifically on global food security. Among these programs is the "Climate-Smart Agriculture" (CSA), which aims at agricultural production capable of increasing yields, enhancing resilience to environmental pressures, and simultaneously reducing or removing greenhouse gas emissions. CSA is an integrated approach that guides the necessary actions to transform and reorient agricultural systems to support effective development and ensure food security in a changing climate. The goals of CSA are to sustainably increase agricultural productivity and income, adapt and build resilience to climate change, and reduce or remove greenhouse gas emissions where possible, thus reducing overall environmental pollution and specifically agricultural environmental components. Achieving these goals requires changes in behavior, strategies, and agricultural practices by rural households by improving their access to climate resilience technologies, knowledge, and information to increase productivity, inputs, market information, and information contributing to income diversification. Additionally, organizing themselves better for collective action and enacting legislation and laws that promote the CSA approach will play a significant role in achieving safe, sustainable smart agriculture in the Arab world.
Workshop Topics:
- Egyptian and Arab agriculture and its development.
- The concept of Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA).
- Current and future impacts of climate change.
- The role of the Global Alliance for Climate-Smart Agriculture in sustainable agricultural development.
- How to apply the CSA approach in modern agriculture and success stories of CSA application.
- Summary, recommendations, and conclusion.
